Publishing with Us – How it Works
The perfect solution for Christian book and academic theological publishing.
How does the Faithbuilders Publishing Process Work?
The following information applies to all unsolicited manuscripts. Once we have received your Christian book publishing submission, it will be reviewed by our editors and (if it is an academic book, by our peer review board). If we think your book is suitable for publication, we will conditionally accept your submission and issue you with a contract and, if applicable, a request for any fees. There are two things which will greatly influence our decision to publish – firstly, we want to know if your book is going to be relevant, and fill a gap in the market. So, for an academic book, please supply as many commendations or reviews as you can. Secondly, we want to know if you are committed to do all you can to promote your own work. For example, are you available for talks/interviews, will you be buying and promoting author copies in your own circles or on social media?
Once your work is conditionally accepted by us, we will issue your contract together with an invoice for fees. The all-inclusive fee represents a contribution to publishing costs, and gives you access to your own professional editor, as well as to our proof-reading and design services which are included. We will help you finalise your manuscript, design your book layout and cover, allocate ISBNs and EAN-13 barcodes, submit your book details to trade lists, retailers and to the British Library for Legal Deposit. We will also market your book. Author copies are available for 35% of RRP, and when you place an order of 50 copies of your book, we will increase this discount to 50%. This is a great bonus for academics who wish to sell their books at lectures, conferences and other speaking engagements. Author copies are non-returnable, and no royalties are paid on author copies. See a full list of our current fees here.
Once your manuscript is completed, it will be stocked in our award-winning print distributor Marston Book Services in Oxford, as well as being made available across a wide range of digital platforms via our global digital distributors Ingram (who are used by 25% of the world’s top 50 publishers). In the USA your book will be distributed by our trade partners Wipf and Stock, based in Oregon, who are active with a 30+ strong trade sales team across America.
Unless otherwise agreed, your royalties are paid annually.
Please ensure that nothing in your intended manuscript contradicts the ECPA Statement of Faith.
I Want to Publish with Faithbuilders – What Must I do Next?
Please submit your manuscript either by email or via our “Submit Your Christian Book Manuscript” page. (If your work is academic please also email at least one recommendation from an academic who knows your work, e.g. your research supervisor, indicating why this research merits publication). It would be helpful if you could send also your most recent resume detailing your academic qualifications and any previous publications (MS Word files please) to the commissioning editor for appraisal: email@example.com
If your work meets our high standards, we will offer a brief critique, indicating the level of editing required, and estimating a turn-around time. If you are happy to proceed, we will send you a copy of the author/publisher agreement for signing. We will commence work on receipt of the signed agreement. When your manuscript is ready, we will ask you to approve a printed proof copy prior to distribution. Please note: we only publish books for the Christian church, plus theological academic works of PhD, Dmin or similar level and some post-doctoral research in Humanities (mainly, but not exclusively, Biblical Studies, Christian Theology and related fields). We will engage in a vigorous peer review process of academic manuscripts prior to publication of your work.
What about Sales & Marketing?
As part of your package, your book’s details will be submitted as an enhanced listing with Nielsen and legal deposit made with the British Library. Book vendors will be able to see your title in these lists and order directly from our distributors. We will issue advance information sheets to relevant buyers, and our sales teams will begin promote your book at trade fairs, directly to bookstores, and to university/seminary departments on our network.
Even so, with thousands of similar books on offer, many of our authors invest in further advertising themselves. We can offer advice on current opportunities for advertising in the main web stores related to your category, or design and send additional marketing mailshots to bookstores, university departments, and libraries on your behalf. Please be aware that direct marketing is not always successful. Contact us to discuss if you have additional marketing needs.
We regret that not all manuscripts will be successful.
If you wish your manuscript to be considered for publication, please submit it in the first instance (MS WORD FILE) to our commissioning editor at: firstname.lastname@example.org You will receive a free critique of your work, and if appropriate, an offer to publish, and an estimated time-scale for publication.
